Welcome to the cradle of Russian medical education — Sechenov University. Our history spans more than 265 years of scientific discovery, teaching excellence, and dedication to human health. You are becoming part of a legacy that started with a single faculty and is now a flagship of global medicine.
Origins and Foundation: 1755
- We are the successor of the Medical Faculty of the Imperial Moscow University, founded on January 25, 1755, by decree of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna.
- The first lectures for future doctors were held in 1758, marking the beginning of an unbroken tradition of medical education.
First Achievements and Establishment
- As early as 1791, our University received the right to award the degree of Doctor of Medicine — the first in Russia!
- By the beginning of the 19th century, our faculty had become the leading center for training physicians, with the quality of education confirmed by its outstanding graduates: 17 out of 36 became professors.
The Birth of Clinical Medicine
- In 1804, a Charter was adopted mandating the creation of a clinical base. By 1805-1806, the first clinics in Russia were opened, united into a Clinical Institute.
- The second half of the 19th century was an era of prosperity. University professors (F.I. Inozemtsev, N.I. Pirogov, etc.) introduced a system of staged clinical training, which became the gold standard in education.
Stellar Names and Legacy
Whole fields of medicine were founded by our professors and alumni. Legends who studied and worked here include:
- N.I. Pirogov — Founder of military field surgery.
- I.M. Sechenov — The "father of Russian physiology."
- S.P. Botkin — Creator of a leading therapeutic school.
- N.V. Sklifosovsky — Outstanding surgeon and organizer.
- A.Y. Kozhevnikov — Founder of neurology.
- N.F. Filatov — Founder of pediatrics.
A Symbol of Progress: The Clinical Campus on Devichye Pole
- In 1897, on the initiative of N.V. Sklifosovsky, a unique Clinical Campus was built — 13 buildings, 15 clinics, 8 research institutes.
- The international community was amazed by its scale. The famous pathologist Rudolf Virchow said: "Learn from the Russians!"
Resilience in Times of Upheaval
- Our staff and students worked heroically on the front lines and in hospitals during the Patriotic War of 1812, World War I, and the Great Patriotic War.
- In 1941, the University was evacuated to Ufa but never ceased its work for a single day.
- Our professors (N.N. Burdenko, A.I. Abrikosov) were among the founders of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences.
The Path to Modern Leadership
- 1990: Transformed into the Moscow Medical Academy (MMA).
- 2010: Granted University status — Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University.
- 2015: We became the only medical university selected for the Russian Academic Excellence Project "5-100".
- Today: We are building the future of medicine. The University is home to:
- The Park of Biomedical Technologies (Institute of Regenerative Medicine, Personalized Medicine, etc.).
- The Center for Digital Medicine.
- Our own University Clinics, equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
