About the University

This section introduces the mission and scope of the museum, which serves as the heart of the university and a bridge connecting its glorious past with its present.
  • Modern Status: Today, the Museum of the History of Medicine is the principal guardian of the memory and traditions of Sechenov University. It is part of the Historical and Patriotic Center named after Hero of the Soviet Union N.V. Troyan and is a member of the International Council of Museums (ICOM). The museum does not merely collect exhibits; it actively participates in the educational and patriotic upbringing of students by organizing educational programs and youth projects.
  • Collection Wealth: The museum's holdings comprise approximately 85,000 unique items. These include memorial archives of outstanding scientists, rare books, paintings, and an extensive collection of 18th-19th century medical instruments, which is one of the most significant in the country.

History and Architecture

The museum building itself is a historical monument, preserving the memory of charity and medical progress
  • A Home for Charity: The museum is housed in a building constructed in 1896, designed by architect K.M. Bykovsky with funds provided by the philanthropist Varvara Alekseevna Alekseeva. Originally, it housed the General Clinical Outpatient Clinic named after her – a cutting-edge medical facility for its time.
  • Path to a Museum: After its opening in 1990, the museum gradually expanded, and in 2004, the entire building was transferred to the museum complex, which today includes the central museum and several branches.
